Definition
Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) is live facilitated training delivered remotely through a virtual classroom or conferencing platform, using breakout rooms, polls, shared whiteboards and screen sharing to preserve interaction. It keeps the real-time facilitation of classroom training while removing travel and venue constraints.
VILT is not classroom material delivered over video. Attention behaves differently on a screen, so sessions are typically shorter, segmented more frequently, and built around participation every few minutes. A three-hour lecture that worked in a room becomes an attendance record online rather than a learning event.
The recurring failure mode is a session where cameras are off and nobody speaks. Practically that is addressed by design rather than exhortation: smaller cohorts, named roles, breakout tasks with an output, and a facilitator supported by a producer handling technology so facilitation is not interrupted.
