Arabic eLearning and Localization
Also known as التعلم الإلكتروني بالعربية والتعريب
Definition
Arabic localization adapts learning content for Arabic-speaking learners: translation by subject-matter-literate translators, right-to-left layout, Arabic typography and numerals, culturally appropriate examples and imagery, and Arabic audio or subtitling. Done properly it produces a native experience rather than a translated one.
Machine translation without expert review is the most common and most damaging shortcut. Technical terminology carries specific meaning, and Arabic offers multiple renderings of terms like compliance, assessment and competency — inconsistency across a program undermines credibility with exactly the audience the content is for.
Localization extends past text. Scenarios set in an unfamiliar business context, names, workplace norms, currencies and screenshots of English-only systems all signal that the content was made for someone else. In many bilingual organizations the requirement is parity: the same program, at equal quality, in both languages.
