Internal Mobility
Also known as التنقل الداخلي
Definition
Internal mobility is the movement of existing employees into new roles within the organization, whether upward, lateral or into a different function. Mature programs make internal opportunities visible to all staff and treat internal candidates as a primary source for open roles rather than a fallback.
The economics favor it. Internal moves preserve institutional knowledge and relationships, reach productivity faster than external hires, and cost less to fill. They also change retention directly: employees who can see and pursue an internal opportunity have less reason to look outside for one.
The obstacle is rarely policy — it is managers who resist releasing strong performers. Programs only work where releasing talent is recognized rather than penalized, and where hiring managers are held to a genuine internal-first process rather than one that exists on paper.
