Definition
A Learning Management System (LMS) is the platform organizations use to deliver, assign, track and report on training. It holds the course catalog, enrolls learners individually or by group, records completions and assessment results, and produces the audit trail that compliance and certification programs depend on.
The defining characteristic of an LMS is administrative control: someone decides who must complete what, by when, and the system enforces and evidences it. That is why regulated training lives in an LMS — the record of who completed which version of which course, and when, is often the actual deliverable.
Selection usually turns on a handful of practical questions rather than feature counts: does it support the content standards your existing library uses, can it model your organizational hierarchy for reporting, does it authenticate against your identity provider, and does the learner experience work on the devices your workforce actually has.
