Definition
Learning analytics is the collection and interpretation of data about learners and learning activity in order to improve programs and inform decisions. It spans operational reporting (who has completed mandatory training), diagnostic analysis (where learners fail assessments) and predictive work (who is at risk of not completing).
A dashboard showing completion by department is reporting: it answers an administrative question. Analysis changes the program. Suppose 60% of learners fail one assessment item on their first attempt; a team that checks the content behind the item and finds the explanation ambiguous can fix the module itself.
Analytics carries more weight with the business once it is joined to data from outside the learning platform. An operations director rarely acts on completion figures alone, but will read completion next to error rates, safety incidents or ramp-up time, because those are numbers the business already manages.
