xAPI, also known as the Experience API or Tin Can API, is a specification for recording learning experiences as simple actor-verb-object statements, such as "Sara completed the forklift safety assessment", and sending them to a Learning Record Store. It can record activity from simulations, mobile apps and on-the-job tools, as well as courses launched inside an LMS.
Because any system can emit statements, xAPI can capture simulation attempts, mobile app usage, coaching conversations, on-the-job observations and performance-support lookups in one stream. The record of learning can then include the coaching and on-the-job practice that a course log never sees.
xAPI supplies a data model and leaves the questions to you. A profile, in this context, is a shared published list of verbs, activity names and identifiers that several systems agree to use, so their statements can be compared. Without one, statements pile up in forms that cannot be matched. Teams that get value from xAPI start with the questions they want answered, then agree that shared list before any system sends a statement.
