Definition
A Learning Record Store (LRS) is the database that receives, validates and stores xAPI statements, and exposes them for querying and analysis. It can run inside an LMS or as a standalone service collecting activity from many systems at once, acting as the single record of learning experience across an organization's tools.
An LRS is designed as a storage and retrieval layer, and most organizations pair it with a business intelligence tool or dashboard. The questions worth asking usually need learning statements joined to HR, performance or operational data that the LRS does not hold.
Governance matters more here than in a conventional LMS. A stream of granular behavioral statements about identifiable employees is personal data. It needs a retention policy, an access model and a stated purpose before collection starts, because writing them after someone asks what the store holds is too late.
