Definition
A Learning Management System (LMS) is the platform organizations use to deliver, assign, track and report on training. It holds the course catalog, enrolls learners individually or by group, records completions and assessment results, and keeps a history of who completed what, and when, that required training and certification programs rely on.
An LMS is built for administrative control. Someone decides who must complete what, and by when; the system assigns it, follows up and records the result. Regulated training usually lives in an LMS for that reason, because the record of who completed which version of which course, and when, is often what the program has to deliver.
Feature counts rarely settle a selection. A handful of practical questions usually do: does it support the content standards your existing library uses, can it model your organizational hierarchy for reporting, does it authenticate against your identity provider, and does the learner experience work on the devices your workforce actually has.
