Definition

Storytelling in learning uses narrative structure — a character with a goal, an obstacle, consequences and resolution — to carry instructional content. Narrative gives abstract material a context to attach to, which improves attention, comprehension and recall compared with the same information presented as a list of facts.

The mechanism is memory. Isolated facts have few retrieval cues; the same facts embedded in a causal sequence about a recognizable person acquire many. That is why practitioners remember the case that went wrong years after forgetting the policy clause it illustrated.

Narrative has to be authentic to be persuasive, which makes it a research task as much as a writing one. Stories drawn from real incidents, in the vocabulary and settings of the actual workplace, earn credibility that generic corporate vignettes with invented names do not.
