Definition

Talent management is the integrated set of practices for attracting, developing, deploying and retaining the people an organization needs — spanning recruitment, onboarding, performance management, development, succession and internal mobility. Its defining feature is treating these as one connected system rather than separate HR processes.

The integration is what produces value. When recruitment, development and succession run independently, organizations hire externally for capabilities they are simultaneously building internally, and lose the people they invested in for lack of a visible next step.

For L&D, talent management is the context that gives development a destination. Training tied to a role someone can actually move into behaves differently from training offered in the abstract — it changes who volunteers, how seriously they engage, and whether managers protect the time for it.
