Definition
Compliance training is mandatory instruction required by law, regulation, industry standard or internal policy — covering areas such as occupational safety, anti-bribery, data protection, anti-money-laundering and sector-specific licensing. Its defining requirement is a defensible record: who completed which version, when, and to what standard.
Because the record is the obligation, compliance programs are usually built around assignment rules, deadlines, escalation and audit-ready reporting. Version control matters more than in other training: when a policy changes, the system must show who was trained on the current version rather than a superseded one.
The familiar risk is training that satisfies the auditor without changing behavior. Effective programs look for evidence of understanding, not just attendance, which is why well-run designs pair the mandatory record with scenario-based assessment and periodic reinforcement rather than an annual click-through.
