Definition
Instructor-Led Training (ILT) is training delivered in real time by a facilitator to a group, traditionally in a physical classroom or workshop. Its distinguishing capabilities are live adaptation to the room, immediate feedback on practice, and the discussion between participants that structured digital content cannot reproduce.
ILT remains the correct choice for a defined set of needs: skills requiring observed practice and correction, sensitive topics where discussion matters, sessions where relationships between participants are part of the objective, and content too volatile or too senior an audience to justify production.
Its constraints are scheduling, travel, capacity and consistency — twelve sessions delivered by four facilitators are not twelve identical sessions. Most organizations therefore reserve live time for what only live time can do, and move knowledge transfer into content the learner completes beforehand.
