Definition

Learning analytics is the collection and interpretation of data about learners and learning activity in order to improve programs and inform decisions. It spans operational reporting (who has completed mandatory training), diagnostic analysis (where learners fail assessments) and predictive work (who is at risk of not completing).

The distinction that determines value is between reporting and analysis. A dashboard showing completion by department answers an administrative question. Finding that one assessment item fails 60% of learners on first attempt, then discovering the underlying content is ambiguous, changes the program — and that is analysis.

Analytics only becomes influential when it connects to data outside the learning platform. Completion figures alone rarely persuade an operations director; completion joined to error rates, safety incidents or ramp-up time speaks in terms the business already uses to make decisions.
