Scenario-Based Learning

Definition
Scenario-based learning places the learner in a realistic situation and asks them to decide, then shows the consequences of that decision. In a branching scenario each choice leads to a different path, so learners experience how decisions compound rather than simply being told which answer was correct.
The technique is effective because it assesses judgment rather than recall. A learner can recite a policy and still mishandle the situation the policy exists for; a scenario surfaces that gap immediately, in a setting where being wrong costs nothing.
Quality depends almost entirely on the distractors. If the wrong options are obviously wrong, the scenario tests reading comprehension. Plausible options drawn from the mistakes people actually make — usually collected from supervisors and incident reports — are what make the exercise diagnostic.
