Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning

Definition
Synchronous learning happens with everyone present at the same time — a classroom session, a virtual class, a live coaching conversation. Asynchronous learning happens on each learner's own schedule through recorded content, written material, discussion threads and assignments. Most programs combine both.
The choice is driven by what the interaction requires rather than by convenience. Negotiating, giving difficult feedback and resolving genuine disagreement need people present together. Explaining a process, demonstrating a system and testing recall do not, and forcing them into a live session wastes the scarcest resource in the program.
Asynchronous delivery is also an accessibility and inclusion decision. Shift workers, distributed teams across time zones, and staff with caring responsibilities are systematically disadvantaged by programs that exist only as live sessions at fixed times.
