Definition
xAPI, also known as the Experience API or Tin Can API, is a specification for recording learning experiences as simple actor-verb-object statements — "Sara completed the forklift safety assessment" — and sending them to a Learning Record Store. Unlike SCORM it is not limited to courses launched inside an LMS.
Because any system can emit statements, xAPI can capture simulation attempts, mobile app usage, coaching conversations, on-the-job observations and performance-support lookups in one stream. That breadth is the point: it allows the record of learning to resemble how development actually happens.
The cost is that xAPI gives you a data model, not answers. Without an agreed vocabulary of verbs and activity identifiers across the systems that report, statements accumulate into an inconsistent pile that resists analysis. Successful implementations start from the questions they want to answer and standardize the profile first.
