Definition
SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) is the long-established standard for packaging e-learning content so it runs in any conformant LMS and reports back completion, time and score. A SCORM package is a zip file with a manifest describing its structure and the launch parameters the platform needs.
SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 remain the most common formats in corporate content libraries, which makes SCORM support a hard requirement in most platform selections regardless of what newer standards offer. Existing libraries represent real capital, and re-authoring them is rarely justified by a platform migration alone.
Its limits are equally well known: SCORM tracks a course-shaped experience in a browser session and reports a narrow set of outcomes. It cannot represent learning that happens across apps, offline, or in the flow of work — the gap that xAPI was designed to close.
