Definition
A Learning Record Store (LRS) is the database that receives, validates and stores xAPI statements, and exposes them for querying and analysis. It can run inside an LMS or as a standalone service collecting activity from many systems at once, acting as the single record of learning experience across an organization's tools.
An LRS is deliberately a storage and retrieval layer rather than a reporting product. Most organizations pair it with a business intelligence tool or dashboard, because the analytical questions worth asking usually require joining learning statements to HR, performance or operational data the LRS does not hold.
Governance matters more here than in a conventional LMS. A stream of granular behavioral statements about identifiable employees is personal data, and it needs a retention policy, an access model and a stated purpose before collection starts — not after someone asks what is in it.
